Need for Black Families to Heal from Trauma so that the next generation will have healthier dynamics

According to Integrated Listening Systems “Trauma is the response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event that overwhelms an individual’s ability to cope, causes feelings of helplessness, diminishes their sense of self and their ability to feel the full range of emotions and experiences.” In life we all have experiences good, bad, some that carry over from one generation to another. When we go through different experience it can cause individuals not to talk about it, deal with it, try to move forward from the trauma to live a happy life.

Research shows that there are different responses and symptoms of trauma. There are emotional signs, physical symptoms, and psychological disorders. Some of the emotional signs are sadness which may lead to nightmares, anger which may lead to insomnia, denial which may lead to difficulty with relationships, fear which may lead to emotional outbursts, and shame. The emotional signs are also often missed or dismissed. Depending on what the traumatic experience is could be hard to talk about for some people. Some people are scared to talk about it to anyone as it could lead to people not taking it seriously or think they are not telling the truth. Trauma is serious and lead to psychological disorders. We need to work on healing from our traumatic experience to help the next generation.

Healing is what needed for families. There are so many people suffering in silence and not speaking up about their trauma experience. Holding on to the traumatic experience can lead to many different feelings that someone may be passing down to others. It is important to learn about letting go of the past trauma. Holding on to the traumatic experience can heart the people around you, can affect your life decisions, and relationships you build and have. Research shows, “transmission is the giving of a task. The next generation must grapple with trauma, find ways of representing it and spare transmitting the experience of hell back to one’s parents. A main task of transmission is to resist disassociating from the family heritage and bring its full, tragic story into social discourse.” The need is there to heal from your trauma because it will help the next generation. How can we heal? It is not the same for everyone, there are different ways to heal. We need to be able to communicate with one another, we need to be able to go to therapy, be able to support one another. If we can speak about our traumatic experience not only does it give an outlet to talk about it but also help others share their experience. We need to take the time to heal and let go in order to help the next generation and to create healthier dynamics. Let heal our traumatic experiences from the past in order to move forward with our lives to become the best version of ourselves.
